What is hard water?

Hard water is water that has a high content of dissolved minerals, especially calcium and magnesium ions. Hard water is formed when rainwater seeps through layers of rock containing lime and magnesium, such as limestone, marl or gypsum. It dissolves calcium and magnesium compounds from the rocks and absorbs them in dissolved form. The longer the water is in contact with these rocks, the higher the content of these minerals.

Consequences of hard water
