An important meeting is just around the corner and there are still tons of data and facts to learn? You want to be well prepared, but the burden of information seems to crush you? Then the learning method of the mind palace could be the solution to your problems soon. Maybe you already heard about the „loci method“. It serves as the basis of the Thought Palace technique and was already used in ancient Rome and Greece. The aim of the loci method is to memorize long texts and lists by visualizing concise key terms easier. If you then depict the visualized key concepts in an imaginary space or a fixed itinerary in your mind, with a little practice, your memory will increase enormously. If you need the knowledge at a later time again, you only need to recall your imaginary space with the objects stored in it and walk off in your thoughts. The imagination knows no bounds.
The loci method
Probably the simplest example of using the loci method is the shopping list. Imagine you still need apples, oranges and milk for the weekend. Now imagine in your mind’s eye a network of fresh, red apples. Exaggerate this a little bit. The more dazzling and striking the picture of apples appears before your eyes, the better. Imagine how aromatic and juicy the apples taste. Once you’ve done that, concentrate on the room or the route you want to drop the apples on and memorize that place. This can be a drawer, a shelf, or just the kitchen table. You do the same for oranges and milk afterwards. Each item on your shopping list gets its own unique place in your imaginary space. It is important to imagine everything as accurately as possible. With a little practice it will always be easier for you and you will notice how you get better and better in it. The next weekly shopping you can now safely without a shopping list.
Build your mind palace
If you have already gained experience with the loci method, you can take the next step: the mind palace! In principle this is the further development of the loci method and is based on the combination of several imaginary spaces and routes. Each space is attributed to a specific field of knowledge and forms a unit in itself. Later, different fields of knowledge can also be linked together. To build your very own thought palace, you should start small, however. Give him time to grow. A few rooms are sufficient for the beginning. Gradually, you can add more and more, rooms, corridors, areas, floors and compartments. Be creative and decorate everything as colorful and exciting as possible. Think about what items you want to place in the rooms. What smell do you perceive, is it light or dark, cold or warm? What do you see when you look out the window? Is there a garden in front of or behind your palace? Feel completely free and be the king of your world of thought. Make each room unique and unique, so you can easily distinguish it from the others later on.
Opening Ceremony
If the basic construct of your mind palace is the foundation, it is time to fill the space with knowledge. In order to store your knowledge permanently, you first have to structure the information. But in most cases this has already happened in the form of lists or vocabulary. Once this is done, use the same principle that you already know from the loci method and visualize your knowledge. Here it makes sense to assign each room its own topic. For example, room number 1 could be related to science, while room number 2 is home to your literary knowledge. The occupancy of the rooms is entirely up to you and can be changed at any time. For do not forget: you are the king of your thoughts! It is time to move into your mind palace. Cultivate, cultivate, modify and decorate it. Nothing is impossible and everything is allowed. Have fun and joy in your mind palace!
